Ergonomic reconception of a cofee-maker

Problem

The study was conducted at the beginning of my engineer training. It involved a consumer product, a coffee-maker, which was to be optimized by focusing on the human-product interaction. It enabled us to establish the foundations for an ergonomic approach, focusing on an existing product on the market, in order to achieve a human-centered design.

The project, step by step

  • Demand analysis, which helped to identify the goal of the study, the time and resources available and establish the first indicators on the product.

  • Study to discover a coffee-maker through a product benchmark accompanied by studies on our coffee-maker (survey of user profiles, user reports, etc.)

  • Ergonomic diagnostic product with several tailored tools such as questionnaires to identify the uses and the way users react to the machine.

  • Ergonomic study of factors emerged as priorities in the previous diagnosis. The tools applied are varied and specific to the problems revealed previously : user testing to identify what the user doesn't say, use of the thermal camera to identify some dangers, or analysis of movements and posture done during the activity and anthropometric analysis.

  • Ergonomic requirements for each identified problem situation in order to correct them.

  • Defining pre-concepts in compliance  with previous recommendations.

  • Choice and validation of a concept based on the ergonomic recommendations.
